Winter storms and extreme cold can create dangerous conditions quickly. Taking a few proactive steps can help keep you, your family, and your home safe during severe winter weather.
Before the storm:
- Monitor weather forecasts and alerts from trusted local sources.
- Prepare an emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a phone charger.
- Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full and store blankets, a shovel, and jumper cables in your car.
- Insulate exposed pipes and allow faucets to drip slightly to prevent freezing.
- Check heating systems, fireplaces, and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure proper operation.
During extreme cold or storms:
- Stay indoors whenever possible and limit travel unless absolutely necessary.
- Dress in layers, including hats and gloves, if you must go outside—wind chill can cause frostbite within minutes.
- Use space heaters safely: keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
- Avoid using grills, generators, or propane heaters indoors due to carbon monoxide risk.
- Keep pets indoors and ensure livestock have shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
After the storm:
- Watch for icy walkways and falling branches when venturing outside.
- Check on neighbors, especially older adults or those with medical needs.
- Report power outages or downed lines to your utility company and stay clear of damaged wires.
Preparing ahead and using caution during winter weather can reduce risks and help everyone stay warm, safe, and healthy until conditions improve. Make sure you’re prepared for a couple days, in case conditions aren’t safe to leave your home.
