When to Seek Wound Care Treatment

Submitted by: Lisa Albanese Klein, Program Director, Orleans Community Health Wound Care Center

Most minor cuts and scrapes heal on their own with basic care.  However, some wounds require specialized treatment to heal properly.  Recognizing when to seek professional wound care can prevent complications and help wounds heal faster.

You should consider seeing a wound care specialist if a wound has not improved within two weeks or has not healed within four weeks. Other warning signs include increased redness, swelling, drainage, foul odor, or worsening pain.

Certain types of wounds are also more likely to need specialized care, including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure injuries and bed sores, venous or arterial leg ulcers, non-healing surgical wounds, radiation related wounds, and traumatic injuries.  Individuals with diabetes, poor circulation, or weakened immune systems may be at higher risk for slow-healing wounds.

Early treatment by a wound care team can help speed healing, reduce infection risk, and prevent more serious complications.  Advanced wound care treatments and specialized expertise can make a significant difference in recovery.
