Protecting Yourself from Ticks

Avoiding tick bites

Spending time outdoors is one of the best parts of warmer weather – but it also means increased exposure to ticks. These tiny insects can carry illnesses such as Lyme disease, making prevention especially important. Thankfully, a few simple habits can greatly reduce your risk of bites.

Ticks are most commonly found in wooded areas, tall grass, and piles of leaves. While they don’t jump or fly, they wait to latch onto people or animals as they pass by. Knowing where ticks live is the first step in avoiding them.

Here are some practical ways to protect yourself:

  1. Wear protective clothing: Choose long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes when walking in wooded or grassy areas. Light-colored clothing can make it easier to spot ticks.
  2. Use insect repellent: Apply EPA-approved repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or permethrin to exposed skin and clothing.
  3. Stay on clear paths: Avoid brushing against tall grass or bushes when hiking or walking outdoors.
  4. Perform daily tick checks: After spending time outside, check your body thoroughly, including under arms, behind knees, around the ears, and along the hairline.
  5. Shower after outdoor activity: Showering within two hours can help wash off unattached ticks and gives you a chance to check your skin.
  6. Check pets and gear: Ticks can hitch a ride indoors on clothing, backpacks, and pets, so inspect them carefully.
  7. Maintain your yard: Keep grass trimmed, remove leaf litter, and create a barrier between wooded areas and your lawn.

Taking these precautions doesn’t mean avoiding the outdoors – it simply means being smart about how you enjoy it. With a little awareness and routine prevention, you can reduce your risk and stay focused on what matters most: enjoying your time outside safely.
