Flu Shots: When, Who, and What to Know

what to know about getting your flu shot this fall

Kathleen Brauen, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy/340B Program at Orleans Community Health

Flu season typically runs from fall through early spring, and getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and those around you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive a flu shot each year, with rare exceptions.

Getting your flu shot or vaccine is a great way to protect yourself and others during flu season.

When to Get Vaccinated:
The ideal time to get your flu shot is in September or October, before flu activity increases. However, vaccination later in the season can still provide valuable protection, especially if flu cases peak later in the winter.

How Often:
Because flu viruses change from year to year, the vaccine is updated annually. You should get a new flu shot every year for the best protection.

What to Know:

  • It takes about two weeks after vaccination for immunity to develop.
  • Flu vaccines are available at many pharmacies, healthcare offices, and community clinics.
  • Pregnant individuals, older adults, young children, and those with chronic health conditions are especially encouraged to get vaccinated.

Getting your flu shot each year helps reduce illness, hospitalizations, and the spread of flu in your community. If you have any questions, speak with your primary care provider.
