5 Health Tips for Days with Excessive Heat

5 tips for dealing with excessive heat in the summer.

Summer is here and we’ve already seen temperatures in the 90s. How we manage our health during the summer heat will determine whether we’re able to avoid heat-related illnesses and stay comfortable. Here are five health tips to consider:

1. Stay Hydrated
Drink Plenty of Water: Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Increase your intake if you are physically active or spending time outdoors.

Avoid Dehydrating Beverages: Limit consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Wear Appropriate Clothing
Light and Breathable Fabrics: Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made of breathable materials like cotton to help keep cool.

Sun Protection: Use a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

3. Plan Activities Wisely
Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Try to stay indoors or in shaded areas during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Take Breaks: If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas to avoid overheating.

4. Eat Light and Fresh
Opt for Light Meals: Heavy meals can increase body temperature. Choose light, fresh meals such as salads, fruits, and vegetables.

Stay Cool with Foods: Include hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges in your diet to help maintain hydration levels.

5. Monitor Health Conditions
Watch for Heat-Related Illnesses: Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale, and clammy skin) and heat stroke (hot, red, dry or damp skin, rapid and strong pulse). Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.

Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure that children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are staying cool and hydrated.

Remember, if you’re experiencing an emergency, dial 911.
