A good night’s sleep is vital to your health and can improve the quality of life. Lack of sleep can leave one feeling exhausted and lead to headaches, irritability, depression and memory loss. Having a sleep disorder has been linked to everything from depression, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, pregnant women in their third trimester and thyroid disease. There is a bi-directional correlation between treating sleep disorders associated with any and all of these.

Sleep disorders are highly common medical issues that affect millions of people a year. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common caused by the obstruction of the airway. It is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. This most often means that the airway has collapsed or is blocked during sleep. The blockage may cause shallow breathing or breathing pauses. When you try to breathe, any air that squeezes past the blockage can cause loud snoring. It is often overlooked during office visits and generally witnessed by your sleep partner.

Other common sleep disorders include insomnia, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy; although there are 88 defined sleep disorders. At Orleans Community Sleep Services,  we focus on the patient and using extensive testing measures to find what ailments, conditions or practices may be affecting your sleep. We educate the public as to good sleep hygiene and provide set up of treatment as well consultations for our patients to examine test results and recommendations by our board certified physicians.
